Road America: Clean EV Charger

Distributed Energy Resources/Microgrids   |   EV Charging

Overview

Road America is an iconic racetrack that has been host to the world’s best motorcar racers for more than 65 years. As an active participant in the NASCAR Green Clean Air Program, they have undertaken several environmental initiatives over the years, including a solar-powered lighting system at their 13-bay garage. To continue to meet their sustainability goals, they sought to support the expanding electric vehicle market by providing clean EV charging services to their customers and spectators.

Solution

EnTech Solutions installed a solar-powered EV charging station at Road America to generate clean energy without the utility grid. Merlin Solar panels were used for a seamless rooftop solution that is visually appealing. Excess power generated is stored in batteries for use on cloudy days or after the sun goes down. If vehicles are not charging, the building is powered by the renewable energy. In addition, net metering is in place, so excess electricity is sold back to the utility when applicable.

Estimated Annual Impact

  • Renewable energy production: 19.11 MWh
  • CO2 avoided: 29,857 pounds; 16.6 acres of forest to sequester same amount of CO2
  • Trees planted: 224

“The decision by EnTech Solutions to expand its role with us is paramount as we look to continue building the success of Road America in the future. This commitment brings EnTech Solutions to the forefront of one of our most important initiatives of improving the experience at America’s National Park of Speed.”

-Mike Kertscher, President and General Manager
